A powder driven fastening tool (10) comprising: a channel (20) for feeding a strip of cartridges (11) to a firing mechanism; a trigger for actuating the firing mechanism, the trigger being movable between a first position and a second position; an advancing lever (70) pivotally coupled to the tool (10), the advancing lever (70) having a strip engagement portion (76) extending into the channel (20) for indexing the strip (11); an advance link (50) cammingly engaged with the advancing lever (70) and operationally associated with the trigger; the strip engagement portion (76) being in a first position in the channel (20) when the trigger is in the first position; and the strip engagement portion (76) being in a second position in the channel (20) when the trigger is in the second position.
