A communication system comprises a short message service (SMS) system being in communication with a private wireless network (102) and a public land mobile network (100). The short message service system provides a public land mobile network service from the public land mobile network to a mobile station (124) and provides a private wireless network service from the private wireless network to the mobile station. The short message service system comprises: a private base station controller (120) receiving a request for a short message service from the mobile station, the private base station controller performing a routing operation in response to the received request, the routing operation being selected from among routing the request to the private wireless network and routing the request to a base station controller of the public land mobile network, the routing operation being selected in dependence upon a destination address of an initial originating message corresponding to the request; and a short message service server (130) being connected to the private base station controller and providing the requested short message service to the mobile station when the private base station controller routes the request to the private wireless network.
