A device for punching holes in cards, tapes and similar recording media comprising a punch die, a plurality of punches and guide means for the punches is characterized in that the guide means, the punches and the punch die are combined in an interchangeable punch head which is provided with a cylindrical shank portion capable of angular and longitudinal adjustment in a base member. In the form shown, the shank portion 12 of a punch head 14 is adjustable in a cylindrical bore 11 of a base-plate 10 being held in position by a setscrew 13. The punch head at its other end is of segmental cross-section having a flat face 16. Mounted in a bore 18 of the shank portion 12 is a punch die 17 previously drilled with punch holes (19), Fig. 3 (not shown), which have clearance downwards so that punched-out matter will clear itself. The punch die can be used as a jig for drilling the guide holes 20 in the punch head. Punches 21 are mounted in the holes 20 and the shank portion 12 inserted in the bore 11 of the plate 10. A reduced portion 23 at the upper end of each punch engages a slot 24 provided in an associated bell crank 27. The bell cranks have a common pivot 28 and are actuated by push rods 29 engaging recesses 29a in the bell cranks. The push rods are actuated individually, e.g. by electromagnets. To prevent deformation of the overhanging die during punching, support pads 30, 31 are provided, these pads having oblique sides 32 defining a shoot for the punched-out matter. The recording tape is inserted laterally into the space 35 between the punch head and die. The punch head is formed of a self-lubricating bronze or other self-lubricating material. Alternatively, the punch head may be formed with an axial bore 15 for lubricant. In a modification, the punch head (35), Figs. 4 and 5 (both not shown), is a cylinder having an offset bore (36) and an axial slit (38) which partly intersects the bore for guiding the recording tape through the punch head. The portion (40) of the cylinder below the slot provides the punch die and has holes (19) machined therein. A hollow bush (37) is forced into the bore (36) and holes are drilled through the walls of the bush using the die as a drill jig. The punches are mounted in the bush holes. The bush has a channel for lubricant. This punch head is mounted by inserting the cylindrical shank portion (41) in the bore 11 of the base-plate 10.
