PURPOSE: The use of ascorbic acid derivatives such as ascorbic acid ester as a bleaching or depigmentation agent for the skin and/or hair is provided. The ascorbic acid derivatives have an advantage simultaneously acting on several components of a coloration mechanism, inhibit melanin biosynthesis and dendricity of melanocytes and reduce the amount of melanin which is delivered to adjacent keratinocytes. CONSTITUTION: For bleaching one or more selected from human skin and hair and other hairs, one or more compounds of formula 1 are used. In formula, R1 to R4 are independently H or a group selected from methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, ferulyl, benzyl, trimethylsilyl, triphenylsilyl, tertiary butyl dimethylsilyl, acetyl, propanoyl, palmitoyl, lipoyl, benzoyl, SO3H, O=P(OH)OH and CH3NHCO; R2 and R3 are independently H or a group selected from methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, ferulyl, benzyl, trimethylsilyl, triphenylsilyl, tertiary butyl dimethylsilyl, acetyl, propanoyl, palmitoyl, lipoyl, benzoyl, SO3H, O=P(OH)OH and CH3NHCO and completes a 5- or 6-membered ring, provided that at least one of R2 and R3 is not H. The compound of formula 1 is 5-(2,2-dimethyl(1,3)dioxolane-4-yl)-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2,5-dihydro-3-furanyl 3-((4-acetoxy-3-methoxy)-phenyl) acrylate.
