PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alternating current type plasma display in which a protective layer has superior membrane characteristics such as membrane strength, adhesiveness, transparency, and protective action, and furthermore in which reduction of a discharge start voltage and a drive power voltage (power consumption) are achieved in the case of using the membrane. SOLUTION: In a manufacturing method of this alternating current type plasma display, opposite arrangement of a rear face substrate and a front face substrate is carried out by having a gas discharge space in between, a mutually paired electrodes covered by a dielectric layer are formed at one substrate or both substrates, and the protective layer is formed on the dielectric layer. In the protective layer, a sol solution in which aggregates of magnesium hydroxide particulates are dispersed in an organic solvent containing at least one kind of hydroxyl group containing organic compound is coated on the dielectric layer, dried and calcined.
