PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape surface observation apparatus which permits observation of the surface of a magnetic tape by regulating the vibration in the thickness direction of the magnetic tape with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: The magnetic tape surface observation apparatus 1 is characterized by being provided with: a magnetic tape driving system for driving the magnetic tape T; a stage 7 which is arranged along one surface Tb of the traveling magnetic tape T and has a smooth guide surface 7a for guiding the magnetic tape T and a slit 11 formed in the transverse direction of the magnetic tape T on the guide surface 7a; and an optical viewing apparatus 4 which is arranged in a manner as to permit viewing of the other surface Ta of the magnetic tape T in a portion of the traveling magnetic tape T which passes the slit 11.
