The search accuracy has not been sufficient in the conventional image search. Moreover, a method capable of high-speed image search has been expected. Original image data and image-to-be-searched data are acquired and correlation pixels are set at a plurality of positions of the original image. Gradation values of the correlation pixels are acquired. On the image to be searched, a region of the same size as the original image is set. While successively modifying the region, a gradation value of comparison pixel corresponding to the same position as the correlation pixel is acquired in that region and a correlation value indicating the similarity between the gradation value of the correlation pixel and the gradation value of the comparison pixel is calculated. For the region where the correlation value indicates a high similarity, similarities between gradation values of substantially all the pixels in the region and gradation values of substantially all the pixels of the original image are calculated and a region having a high similarity is extracted.
