A liquid crystal display device writes an image signal of a frame to be displayed into a liquid crystal display panel (6) and intermittently turns ON a backlight light source (7) during one frame period, thereby preventing a motion blur generated when displaying a moving picture. The device includes means (8, 10) for variably controlling the ON time of the backlight light source (7) according to the type of the image content to be displayed. Thus, it is possible to improve the general image quality by appropriately suppressing image quality deterioration caused by factors such as motion blur, stroboscopic, and flicker.
