The automatic pressure control system is used in an internal combustion engine. It incorporates a pressure sensor and fuel metering device (32) connected to the high-pressure fuel reservoir for a common rail injection system. The fuel metering device has a plastics housing (56) with an electrical connection (58) to a coil (62). It has an armature (60) extending through a magnetic core (66) incorporating a hollow cylinder (69) containing a spring-loaded (70) control piston (68). The fuel flow curve is shaped so that is flat in the idle region.
