摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having a self-regulating property of the orientation direction on the liquid crystal molecule in modified state and taking a state oriented in a direction different from the rubbing direction on a display function layer, a liquid crystal display element provided with a display function layer having a non-modified display function region and/or a modified display function region by the liquid crystal composition and further provide a method for the production and the control of the composition and element. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains a liquid crystal compound, a gelling agent composed of a hydrogen bond-forming compound having polymerizable double bonds on both terminals, and a photopolymerization initiator to start the polymerization reaction of the hydrogen bond-forming compound. The liquid crystal display element has a display function layer formed between rubbed substrates and having non-modified display function region and/or modified display function region subjected to photopolymerization treatment. The element is produced by the selective irradiation of light to a liquid crystal composition layer. The temperature of the display function layer is controlled based on the phase transition temperatures T1 and T2 of the non-modified liquid crystal composition and the modified liquid crystal composition.
