PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a cost of a relief valve maintaining a pressure of a pressure chamber of a chain tensioner at a set pressure or less, and to prevent leakage of hydraulic oil in the pressure chamber from an oil drain passage incorporated with the relief valve in a closed state of the relief valve. SOLUTION: A plunger 3 and a spring 5 are incorporated in a cylinder chamber 2 formed in a housing 1. The relief valve 30 comprising an assembly of a valve body 33, a valve element 34, and a spring 35 is fixed to the oil drain passage 20 communicating the pressure chamber 6 formed in a back part of the plunger 3 with the outside to prevent axial movement of the relief valve 30 by pressure fluctuation of the pressure chamber 6, and the leakage of the hydraulic oil in the pressure chamber 6 to the outside from the oil drain passage 20 in the closed state of the relief valve 30 is prevented. The cost of the relief valve 30 is reduced by forming the valve body 33 by a sleeve 31, and a cap 32 pressed in an opening end part of the sleeve 31. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
