PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a sealing material which gives the sealing material ensuring sufficient reliability even when a silica powder employed as a raw material is the one contaminated with an electroconductive foreign matter such as a metal, and a sealing material manufactured by the manufacturing method. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the sealing material comprising the silica powder and a thermosetting resin, the silica powder is heated within the temperature range of 700-1,500°C in the atmosphere and subsequently admixed with the thermosetting resin. Even when the silica powder employed as the raw material is the one contaminated with the electroconductive foreign matter such as the metal, the electroconductive foreign matter such as the metal in the silica powder can be oxidized and removed. Thus, the sealing material ensuring sufficient reliability is obtained using such a silica powder. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
