A distance tube (4) is inserted through a first aperture in the wall to be reinforced, of the hollow chamber profile (1). The tube passes through the complete profile interior. A first forming part (5) of a tool is fitted into one end of the tube to expand it, and a second forming part (6) is inserted through a second aperture into the other tube end, to act as counter bearing. The expanded tube end is fastened to the profile wall, and the tool is then withdrawn. The first tool part has a mainly conical expanding part, merging into a cylindrical guide part corresponding to the internal diameter of the tube. The second part has a similar cylindrical part, and a conical part with a contact face.
