Method for designing waveguide geometries with a defined light distribution in integrated optical components has the following steps: setting of an initial light distribution at the input to the waveguide; setting of a target light distribution at a particular point in the waveguide; selection of a number of waveguide geometries that approach the preset intensity distribution; use of a generic algorithm on the selected geometries to determine a new geometry and; iteration of the algorithm until the actual intensity distribution at the target point in the waveguide meets the required target intensity. The algorithm is implemented with a neuronal network.
