Apparatus for heating a liquid (e.g. water in a milking shed) to from 60 to 90 DEG C reliant onpassing that liquid in a non mingling heat exchange with a working fluid such that a heat exchange occurs initially which allows uptake by the liquid of at least some of the sensible heat and all of the latent of the working fluid and thereafter another heat exchange which allows the uptake of all of the superheat from the working fluid, the heat exchangers being part of a heat pump deriving its input heat by heat exchange from a refrigeration system having a working fluid with a lower evaporation temperature than that of the working fluid in direct heat exchange with the liquid to be heated. |
