PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar heating element for a snow melting apparatus for effectively using the quantity of snow melting heat for melting snow, and to provide the snow melting apparatus. SOLUTION: The planar heating element has a heating means 7 for supplying the quantity of heat for melting snow, a surface plate 8 heated by the heating means 7, and support members 9, 10 for supporting the surface plate 8. The surface plate 8 is at least partially formed in downward inclined shape toward the end faces with respect to an approximate plane. Snow is thereby melted on the surface plate 8, and melted snow water is automatically drained along the inclination by the own shape of the surface plate 8. The quantity of heat for melting snow can be effectively used for melting snow without needing to use the quantity of heat for the prevention of refreezing. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
