The invention provides a method and kit for detecting or diagnosing a risk of or predisposition to diabetes or a metabolic syndrome in a subject, the method comprising the steps of providing a biological sample of the subject to be tested and detecting the presence or absence of a variant genotype of the human alpha2B- adrenoceptor in the biological sample. The presence of the variant genotype indicates an increased risk of diabetes or a metabolic syndrome in said subject. The invention also relates to a method for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
