PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording apparatus which enables high-speed printing without damaging the speedup of printing even if nozzle arrays in a sub-scanning direction are highly densified in such a state that the precision of a control means for moving a recording medium in the sub-scanning direction is held as it is. SOLUTION: The ink jet recording apparatus is equipped with a mechanism for moving an ink jet recording head, which has a plurality of nozzles capable of forming dots same in color at a predetermined interval in the sub-scanning direction with respect to a printing medium to discharge ink drops, in a main scanning direction with respect to the printing medium and a mechanism for moving the printing medium in the sub-scanning direction different from the main scanning direction. The ink jet recording head has an effective nozzles which perform printing in the sub-scanning direction and stopped adjusting nozzles with respect to one nozzle row and determines the effective nozzles and the adjusting nozzles on the basis of the comparison of the target moving quantity in the sub-scanning direction of the printing medium with actual moving quantity at every main scanning to perform printing to enable recording and printing at an accurate position in spite of a structure low in precision.
