PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method and a coater for applying a coating solution at a high precision to a film-like substrate through a transfer roll. SOLUTION: A transfer roll 3 is installed so as to position the rotation center axis P under the liquid surface of a liquid storage tank 2 storing a coating solution S and the liquid storage tank 2 is kept in approximately air-tight state by the first and the second blades 4 and 5 pinching the transfer roll 3 and the coating solutions S is applied to the circumferential face and transported with the transfer roll 3 by rotating and operating the transfer roll 3 in the state that the tank is packed with the coating solution S for applying the coating solution S to a substrate F.
