The UV (ultraviolet) lamp (1) has electrodes (4,5) at each end of its tubular body (3). Contact pins (8,9) are held in a ceramic socket (10) at one end of the lamp and are directly connected to the first electrode. Return lines (6,7) run between the lamp tube and the outer casing (2) to contacts (11) for the second electrode. One or both return lines may be at a distance (A) from the lamp tube and may be longer than the shortest distance between fixing points for electrodes and contacts.
