SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REAL-TIME WEB FRAGMENT IDENTIFICATION AND EXTRACTION

A system and method for identifying and retrieving portions of a web page fr om a source web site. The portion of the web page is a web fragment. A web fragment identifier specifies the source web page and navigation instruction s for accessing the web page. The web fragment identifier also specifies attribute s of the web fragment to enable the system to locate the web fragment. The method includes navigating to and retrieving the source web page and decomposing th e source web page into its constituent objects. The system locates the web fragment within decomposed web page based upon the attributes specified in the web fragment identifier. The attributes may include a unique ID name, an absolute position of the fragment within the web page, or a relationship wit h an anchor point. The anchor point may be located by the system based upon a key phrase specified in the web fragment identifier. The system receives request s for web fragments from remote users and returns the located web fragments to the users for real-time incorporation into a web page.
