<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device with which high-contrast display is carried out by providing a transflective layer based on a PBS array with excellent polarization characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal layer 5 interposed between an upper substrate 3 and a lower substrate 2 placed oppositely to each other. An upper polarizing plate 18 and a lower reflection polarizing layer 6 are disposed on the upper side and on the lower side of the liquid crystal layer 5, respectively . The lower reflection polarizing layer 6 has a dielectric laminated film 25 consisting of a plurality of dielectric layers laminated on slopes of a plurality of protrusions 26 of a substrate layer 22 with a triangular wave shaped cross section. Total film thickness of the dielectric laminated film 25 at the ridge line parts of the protrusions 26 is made to be 50% of the height of the protrusions 26 at the ridge line parts of the protrusions 26 or less. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
