<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for operating an internal combustion engine for reducing fuel consumption. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for operating the internal combustion engine 12, an exhaust gas system 24, 25, 28 is provided with a control device 10 setting operation modes 31, 32 different in fuel consumption and unprocessed NOx mass flow 27, and a NOx occlusion catalyst 29 disposed to the exhaust gas system 24, 25, 28.
