PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mobile telephone or the like capable of detecting a direction in which an operator touches the mobile telephone or the like, and of realizing a desired function according to the detected direction.

SOLUTION: This portable electronic device has: an impedance sensing means installed in a planar form in the vicinity of a surface of a case body; a means for obtaining a direction of a detection region based on the shape of a region of which the impedance change is sensed by the impedance sensing means; a means for obtaining a predetermined position from the inside of the region of which the impedance change is sensed by the impedance sensing means to collectively generate the temporal change of the position as an operation input signal; and a means for controlling the section of the operation input signal generated according to the direction of the obtained detection region.
