An article having a functional coating film thereon which has a substrate and, applied on the surface thereof, an undercoat layer having fine concaves and convexes, and, further applied thereon, a functional layer, characterized in that the fine concaves and convexes comprise portions formed through nonuniform deposition of fine particles. The undercoat layer preferably comprises a silicon oxide as its main component and can combine the presence of fine concaves and convexes and high transparency.
