<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clear a payment quickly, reliably and at a minimum transfer fee in dependence on a user's account balances and a store's financial institution. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic settlement system on a computer network configures a virtual shopping mall on a computer network to enable a user to purchase desired merchandise online at a store in the shopping mall and to clear the purchase price. In correspondence with actual financial institutions for clearing purchased merchandise, a virtual account collecting account information about one or more actual financial institutions is opened on the network. Every user has such a virtual account. When the user purchases merchandise, the virtual account is checked for the store's actual financial institution and account balances in the actual financial institutions, and then an instruction to clear the price by an automatic transfer at a minimum transfer fee is given to an actual financial institution, which in turn settles the price according to the instruction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
