PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a method for regulating the molecular weight of a silicate compound as having the reproducibility and no problem in the stability of a condensate obtained. SOLUTION: This method for modifying the silicate compound, giving a reaction mixture by reacting a silicate compound having alkoxy groups bonded in the number of 6 or more on average to, Si atoms with a diol, is characterized in that the diol has a molecular weight of 160 or less and an SiO<SB>2</SB>concentration of the above reaction mixture is 70% or more of the SiO<SB>2</SB>concentration of the above silicate compound. The modified silicate obtained by this method has a structure in which the oxygen atoms at the both ends of the diol unit after eliminating respective hydrogen atoms from two hydroxy groups of the diol having a molecular weight of 160 or less are bonded respectively with a silicate unit after eliminating one alkoxy group from a condensate of a tetraalkoxysilane.
