PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which can react at a temperature higher than ordinary temperature without the need for a specific cooling device, having a high selectivity and a long life in a system for synthesizing an ester of carboxylic acid from an aldehyde compound represented by the Tishchenko reaction. SOLUTION: In the method of preparation of an ester of carboxylic acid by dimerization reaction of an aldehyde compound, the catalyst for preparation of an ester of catalytic acid consists of an aluminum alkoxide compound and a compound of sulfonic acid and/or at least one kind of compounds selected from among the salts of the groups IV-XIV metals in the periodic table of the sulfonic acid. In the preparation of an ester of carboxylic acid by dimerization reaction of an aldehyde compound by the use of the catalyst, the reaction is conducted under the condition of 30-100°C reaction temperature.
