PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading and recording apparatus capable of being miniaturized, and suppressing ink contamination of an image reading unit while maintaining recording accuracy and reading accuracy. SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with a paper transfer means having a document transfer unit and a recording paper transfer unit, a reading means for reading the image of an original and a recording means for recording the image on a recording sheet, and a white reference defining member for defining a white reference of the reading means and having at least one notch in a paper passing direction and a widthwise direction. The transfer paths of the document transfer means and the recording paper transfer means are partly formed by a common transfer path, and reading and recording are performed in the common transfer path. The reading means can be retracted from the common transfer path, and the reading means can be embedded in the common transfer path by fitting a rib erected on the common transfer path into the notch of the white reference defining member when the reading means is positioned at the common transfer path.
