A cylindrical sewing machine has a vertical support (21) and a seat (6) for the needle opening (7). The drive for the lower feed wheel (10) is modified so that it is taken through a single hollow column that acts as a combined support and seat for the needle opening. As a result the distance between the needle (4) and the vertical side of the needle opening (7) is reduced.
