One or more slide assemblies are pressed together. Each assembly comprises a sample slide (1), a cover plate (3) with spacers (4) and a sealing slide (5). Parallel gaps are formed, above which fluids are supplied. The fluids drain away, largely through the gaps. When the assembly is pressed together, a reservoir (8) is formed above each gap. By suitable geometric form of the sealing slides, a common fluid reservoir may be formed over the assembly, feeding several sample slides. The gap between the slide and cover plate is open above and below the assembly; it may also be open down the long sides. The gap is formed by a spacer, which is clamped in place and may also be adhered-on. It is strip-like, defines points, or has other geometry, so long as it holds the defined spacing when compressed in the assembly. Spacers are attached to the sample slide. The cover plate (also claimed) comprises a slide-sized, glass plate, with geometric shapes printed- or polymerized onto it, and having a defined layer thickness. The sealing slide (also claimed) forms one or more reservoirs over the assembly as described. If appropriate, pressure plates and a clamp (6) are added. Many assemblies are held together in such an arrangement. The trough (also claimed) in which the assemblies are hung, reduces evaporation to an acceptable level. The arrangement can be used with a pipetting robot. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) method of treatment ; (b) temperature-controlled trough in which assemblies as described, are hung for treatment; and (c) individual components.
