<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for managing merchandise by using an IC chip, in particular, to provide a technique for smoothly conducting return of merchandise sold to a consumer. <P>SOLUTION: Sales information being information on the sale of merchandise is written on the IC chip attached to the merchandise at the time of selling the merchandise. The sales information is transmitted to a merchandise management server installed at every store. The sales information includes the sale date of the merchandise. In this case, the sale date of the merchandise written on the IC chip is compared with a desired return date (for example, the present time detected by a clock in a handy scanner). The possibility of return acceptance is determined from the result. The sales information also includes information showing the actually sold price of the merchandise. When the possibility of the return is determined, an amount to be returned is calculated on the basis of the actually sold price written on the IC chip.
