PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily layout a hoisting machine 5 and the like even in a comparatively small hoistway space, and to realize an elevator easy in the layout of a main rope 10 and the like, in the elevator comprising the main rope 10 wound on sheaves 22, 7 mounted on upper and lower parts of the hoistway for vertically moving a car 2 and a counterweight 30. SOLUTION: A through hole 31 is formed on the counterweight 30, and the main rope 10 moving between the sheaves 7, 22 is passed through the through hole 31 to save the space for the hoistway.
