PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder and a recording method in which the lifetime of a recording element can be prolonged at a low cost. SOLUTION: The recorder where a recording head having a plurality of recording elements and a recording medium move relatively and intermittently and the recording head performs dot recording on the recording medium during relative movement comprises a means having a plurality of mask patterns for specifying such dots as recording is inhibited among dots recordable by means of the recording head during single relative movement, including such mask patterns as having not dot recording of which is inhibited, and selecting one of the plurality of mask patterns, and a means for controlling the driving conditions of the recording elements depending on the selection results from the selecting means and the number of recording elements being driven simultaneously.
