PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproduction separation type magnetic head which has a high recording magnetic field and a low off-track leakage magnetic field and which has a narrow track thin film recording head suitable for a narrow track pitch. SOLUTION: A protrusion 24 which has a width Lpfw which is equal to a track width Tw or a little wider than it and which is projected to a floating face side is provided in a lower magnetic pole 5 or a lower magnetic pole end layer 19. The lower magnetic pole 5 or the lower magnetic pole end layer 19 other than the protrusion is retreated from the floating face 15 by Lpfd. When the magnetic head is made to take such a constitution, the upper end face 23 of the lower magnetic pole 5 or the lower magnetic pole end layer 19, in which the leakage magnetic field of an off-track part is generated, is not exposed to the floating face 15, and hence the leakage magnetic field Hxz of the off-track part can be reduced sharply.
