The data processing device has an operating system and a data processing program. The method involves a first step in which user authentication data are acquired, a second in which an identity and access rights are determined and a third in which access to the data processing program and/or sensitive data is granted depending on the access rights. The steps are independent of starting the operating system or the data processing application. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a computer program for implementing the inventive method (b) and a data medium for storing a program for implementing the inventive method.
