VIDEO TRACKING SYSTEM AND METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video tracking system and method for tracking a moving object. SOLUTION: A video tracking system (20) and method includes a video camera (22) having a panning direction (26), a tilting direction (28) and a focal distance (30) which may be selectively adjusted. A processor receives a video image acquired by the camera. The processor detects a target within the image and selectively adjusts the camera to track the target. The camera is adjusted at a variable speed selected as a function of an attribute of the target such as a speed, for example. The focal distance of the camera is selectively adjusted as a function of a distance from the camera to the target. The image acquired by the camera is geometrically deformed to adjust a location of an image having a different field of view in order to promote analysis of the image, such that the camera may be continuously adjusted to generate the video image having a comparatively smooth and variable motion.
