PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inspection method of an internal combustion engine that properly inspects the switching state of a variable valve mechanism, and an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: In a head cover 1 having a rocker arm valve 2, high lift rocker arm 3, low lift rocker arm 4, cams 5, 6, switch pin 7 and control rod 8, a through-hole 9 for inspection is made directly above the switch pin 7. A bar-shaped CCD camera 10 is inserted into the through-hole 9, thereby allowing an inspector to directly check the protruding state of the switch pin 7. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
