A surface-treated metallic material comprising a metal surface coated, through cathode electrolysis, with an inorganic surface-treated layer composed mainly of at least Zr, O and F wherein no phosphate ion is contained, or an inorganic surface-treated layer composed mainly of at least Zr, O and F wherein the atomic ratio of P to Zr contained in the topmost surface satisfies the relationship: 0 <= P/Zr < 0.6. The surface-treated metallic material not only excels in high-speed productivity, environmental protection, scuff resistance, bonding property, workability and adhesion but also can be provided at low cost. A metal can exhibiting excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance even at complex working portions as well as a can lid exhibiting excellent openability even after thermal sterilization can be obtained by forming them from a metallic material produced by coating the above surface-treated metallic material with an organic resin, especially a polyester resin.
