PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymerization catalyst for aromatic vinyl monomers which is readily synthesized in a high yield and exhibits high polymerization activity within a wide temperature range from a low temperature to a high temperature. SOLUTION: The catalyst for polymerizing the aromatic vinyl compound comprises a group 4 metal complex component (A) represented by general formula (1): CpML<SB>m</SB>X<SB>(3-m)</SB>(wherein Cp is a group bearing a cyclopentadienyl anion skeleton; M is a group 4 metal; L is a monovalent anionic ligand having a group 15 element as a donor atom of ligand; X is hydrogen, a 1-20C alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an aryl group, an aryloxy group, an aralkyl group or halogen; m is an integer of 1-3; and when a plurality of L's and X's exist, they are each independently the same or different), and an activating agent (B) selected from an alkylaluminum oxy compound and a boron compound.
