PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of an ink jet print system ejecting an ink while performing scanning operation with a print head, that since the ink jet printing system has a characteric to adhere the ink to the print surface while being shifted to the right from the ejecting position, and the ink also adheres to the print surface while being shifted to the left when the print head moves to the left, the print image is not printed. SOLUTION: The ink jet printer is provided with a print direction selecting means for selecting the scanning direction when printing is performed from a variation in the distance between a print head and a print medium, and arranged to perform printing during scanning operation of the print head in the returning direction in such an area as the distance between the print head and the print medium increases for scanning operation of the print head in the going direction, and to perform printing during scanning operation in the returning direction in such an area as that distance decreases. When printing is performed on a solid object having protrusions and recesses, inclination of the print surface is determined from the distance between the print head and the print medium and the scanning direction is selected between the going direction and the returning direction depending on that inclination when printing is performed thus attaining good print results while eliminating degradation of print quality, e.g. the reverse.
