The spanner has at one end a socket section (51) with open chamber and base hole (53) in a side wall thereof. A ratchet wheel (60) with cogged perimeter rotates in the socket section and a stop block (70) fitted in the open chamber has a cogged engagement section to engage with the cogged perimeter of the wheel and to restrict the rotational direction of the wheel in the socket section. A spring member(80) in the open chamber bears against the stop block to engage it with the wheel. The spring member has a central section whose diameter is larger than that of the base hole of the spanner, and a first coupling section at one end of the spring member and having smaller diameter than that of the base hole so that the first coupling section is inserted in the base hole and the centre section is stopped through the side wall of the open chamber.
