As shown, a hinge mechanism 14 pivotally mounts a motor vehicle bonnet 12 on to a motor vehicle body. In the normal operating position, leaf members 22 and 26 are connected by catch members 30 and pivot about one fixed axis 18 relative to a lower leaf member 24. The application of a greater than normal upward force on the rear of the bonnet (eg due to the inflation of a safety air bag below the bonnet) allows the release of catch members 30 to enable the hinge to open out into a backward 'Z' shape as shown, whereby leaf member 22 can pivot about axis 28. The bonnet can rise to a pre-determined height by pivoting about more than one axis with members 22 and 24 able to move apart from each other and towards each other. The hinge mechanism is able to subsequently return to the normal operating position when a greater than normal downward force is applied to the bonnet. |
