PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially producing a racemic aminopentanenitrile in a simple operation from an optically active aminopentanenitrile. SOLUTION: The optically active aminopentanenitrile is racemized by heating the compound in the presence of a base in an atmosphere without hydrogen. An alkali metal oxide, an alkali metal alkoxide or ammonia, especially preferably ammonia can be used as the base. The useful optically active aminopentanenitrile can be obtained in a high yield by combining the racemic process with an optically resolving process and recycling a residue after separating the useful optically active aminopentanenitrile in the optically resolving process to the racemic process.
