PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering device with a simple structure including a device for securing the development space of an airbag by moving the airbag to a vehicle body side at the collision of a vehicle when the distance between the airbag and a driver is not enough. SOLUTION: A steering column 18 is composed of an inner column 34 and an outer column 36 so as to be extendable and contractible, and the relative movement of both columns 34, 36 during normal traveling is prevented by a relative movement control device 40. At the collision, a wedge member 48 is once backed up by a resistance changing motor 42, friction resistance of a friction pad 56 is reduced to allow the relative movement of both columns 34, 36, and the airbag is moved by reaction force applied to an steering wheel. When the inner column 34 is detected to have moved by a prescribed amount by a moving amount measurement device 70, the wedge member 48 is forwarded by the resistance changing motor 42 to increase the frictional resistance of the relative movement control device 40, and the inertia energy of the driver is absorbed.
