The sensor (10) has an illumination device (16) with a number of separately controlled light sources, e.g. LED's, for illuminating the material surface (12) with a moving light pattern and a viewing device (18), e.g. a CCD sensor array, for detection of brightness values from the material surface, evaluated for determining the material surface relative velocity. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a device for measuring the relative velocity of a material surface; and (b) a method for measuring the relative velocity of a material surface.
