PURPOSE: An apparatus is provided to continuously manufacture rolling articles without stopping a rolling process by detecting an error of a radiant thermometer and switching a measurement system into a backup thermometer when the radiant thermometer error occurs. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for detecting an error of a radiant thermometer and switching a measurement system into a backup thermometer includes a signal comparing section(22), a timer(24), and a signal switching section(26). The signal comparing section(22) calculates a differential temperature by comparing temperatures detected from two radiant thermometers. The timer(24) operates an alarming device when an alarming signal is applied thereto for a predetermined time. The signal switching section(26) switches a temperature signal detected from one radiant thermometer into a temperature signal detected from the other radiant thermometer.
