PURPOSE: A passenger protecting device in a bus is provided to prevent accidents and to improve the quality by controlling the transmission into the neutral range through a transmission control unit with an engine control unit in detecting passengers on the step around the door of the bus. CONSTITUTION: A passenger protecting device of a bus is composed of a sensor unit(100) having a pedal effort sensor(110) placed on the steps of a door(400); a transmission control unit(200) controlling a transmission(210); and an engine control unit(300) connected to the sensor unit and the transmission control unit to control the transmission into the neutral range through the transmission control unit in detecting passengers on the steps around the door by the sensor unit. An optical sensor(120) is formed in the sensor unit, and composed of a light emitting unit(121) and a light receiving unit(122).
