At least some of the defective preforms (V) are heated (2). They are not eliminated (3) until after heating. Defective preforms capable of being heated without difficulty, are not separated until after heating. Only defective preforms likely to cause problems during heating, are separated first. Defective preforms with slightly oval mouths are eliminated after heating. Those with markedly oval-, or narrowed mouths are eliminated before heating. Non-defective preforms adjacent to gaps caused by elimination, are rejected after heating (which will be disturbed and cause defects, as a result of the gaps).
