Aromatic hydrocarbons containing one or more benzene nuclei are alkylated by admixture with a catalyst comprising at least one alkyl aluminium dihalide (which may be produced in situ) in admixture with a tungsten hexahalide and subsequent addition thereto of an olefin. Suitable aromatics, which also serve as solvents, are benzene, toluene, the xylenes, mesitylene, naphthalene and phenanthrene. Suitable olefins are C 1-20 terminal or non-terminal olefins. The example describes the alkylation of toluene with 2-pentene to give a mixture of mono- and di-pentyl toluenes. |
